Bakelite was created in 1907 by Leo Hendrik Baekeland and jewelry was manufactured using it until the early 1950s when it was replaced by Lucite. Verify a piece of Bakelite by testing with a wet Q-tip, a yellow nicotine like stain will be produced no mater what the color of the piece is. All our Bakelite has been verified and is vintage. Beware of pieces being sold on eBay that are Chinese Fakelite.
Leaning the lingo of Bakelite as basic colors such as red, green, yellow are known as paprika, red cream soda, split pea, mustard, butterscotch and more. Value adders include end of day [3 or more colors mixed], transparent and translucent and heavily carved.
We came across this collection at some recent estate sales.
